Abstract

This study aims to analyze the meaning of the Buddhist Culture program for Buddhist adolescents at the Sunday Buddhist School of Vihara Theravada Buddha Sasana in Kelapa Gading, North Jakarta. The Buddhist Culture program, which includes learning Buddhist songs and musical training, is believed to serve as a means to cultivate saddha (faith) and strengthen the buddhist identity of adolescents. This research adopts a qualitative approach with a phenomenological method to explore the experiences, meanings, and impacts of the program from the perspectives of adolescents, mentors, and Sunday school organizers. Data were collected through observation, in-depth interviews, and documentation. The results indicate that the Buddhist Culture program is perceived as an enjoyable and meaningful approach to learning buddhism. It helps adolescents to understand the values of the Buddha’s teachings, enhances their faith in the Buddha Dhamma, and contributes to the development of moral character and a stronger buddhist identity. Challenges identified include lack of discipline, fluctuating motivation, and unsupportive external environments. Nevertheless, the program continues to offer a positive contribution to the reinforcement of the religious identity of buddhist adolescents.
